A photograph must say: Here is what these people are like now. ~anonymous

I began my love of photography in college when I took a class in which I was only allowed to shoot fully manual with a 35mm film camera and a 50mm prime lens. I developed my own film and enlarged my prints to satisfy my instructor’s assignments. This class was vital to who I am as a photographer today. It was the first time that I used a camera to see the world differently and I quickly discovered that I really loved expressing myself through the eye of my lens. I shot mostly artistic and abstract images at first and then I opted to shoot portraits for my final project. I learned that I not only enjoyed expressing myself, but I enjoyed capturing the essence of who people are.

One of my favorite quotes regarding photography is: “A photograph must say: Here is what these people are like now.” I aim to fulfill that quote. Spontaneity is a big part of how I approach photography and it dictates my portrait style. I don’t like to “pose” people — I want you to be comfortable with where and how you stand, and then smile the way you do when no one is looking. I want to document you for who you are, because no one else is like you.

My favorite part of being a photographer is the pursuit of “the moment” and capturing it forever. Whether it be a wedding or portrait session, there are “moments” that can exist only once and can’t be replicated or manufactured again.

My second favorite element of being a photographer is making friends with my amazing clients. I love knowing that I am connected to each one of them and able to contribute to their lives in a way that will last forever.

I would love to get to know you as well, even if you aren’t a client or if you will be someday. You can catch me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, but the best place is to visit alandarmody.com often and leave comments and I’ll be sure to return the favor if you have a blog.
